Communications Assistant
The Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association, Westerville, Ohio
General Description:
The ONLA is seeking a full‐time communications professional to add to its dynamic association
staff team. The Communications Assistant, under the supervision of the Associate Executive
Director (Communications & Marketing Director), will assist in carrying out the association’s
communications strategy by providing research, editorial, design, and administrative support
focused on enhancing the ONLA’s visibility to members, business partners, and other key
stakeholders.  These strategies include, but are not limited to, producing print and electronic
communications in support of the association’s programs and funding activities.
Ideal candidates will be energetic, inventive, hard‐working, social media and web‐savvy, and
committed to engaging audiences in the organization’s mission.
Purpose: To assist the Associate Director in communications and marketing efforts to promote
the mission, core competencies, and programs of the ONLA. The Communications Assistant
provides critical administrative and substantive support to the Associate Director and other
ONLA staff, helping to research, write, edit and produce articles and publications by staff;
engage in media outreach via creation of press releases and maintenance of media contact
database; maintain website content and social media pages; and help develop and disseminate
persuasive materials and messages to policymakers and opinion leaders; financial and political
supporters; the media; and the general public.
Key Activities:
□ Assist in researching, writing, editing, proofreading, and producing/posting of print and
web‐based materials.
□ Design communications products/promotional materials.
□ Develop and compile content for the website.
□ Maintain and update website and Social Media pages (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter).
□ Assist with production of fundraising and public awareness materials.
□ Develop and disseminate communications products (e.g., publications, articles, press
materials).
□ Develop and produce communications products for meetings and other internal and
external events.
□ Clerical and administrative support to Associate Director.
□ Support job fair, awards and scholarship/grant programs.
□ Maintain files ensuring an updated library of media, photos, and related programmatic
materials.
□ Log, field, and track contacts appropriately.
Skills Needed:
□ Superior written, verbal and organizational skills.
□ Excellent computer skills, with experience in Social Media and MSOffice.
□ Willingness to help with a variety of programs and tasks.
□ Well organized, detail‐oriented and self‐motivated.
□ Willingness to collaborate with staff and association volunteers.
□ Ability to work independently and with others.
□ Familiarity with MLA and AP styles.□ Experience with desktop publishing software (e.g., InDesign, Photoshop) helpful, but not
required.
□ Punctual, consistent attendance.
□ Ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines.
