Public Relations Intern (Volunteer) – Event Planning & Management
Reports To: Chairman
Position Summary
ASCEND: The Black Professional Association of Columbus is seeking a Public Relations Intern to
assist with coordinating outreach and community service events, supporting our organizational
mission of engaging young professionals in Central Ohio.
The Public Relations Intern will work directly with our leadership team to plan and implement
networking, professional development, and community service activities for young professionals.
The ideal candidate has strong written & verbal communication skills, and is comfortable working
with internal and external partners at all career levels. The Intern will be working remotely and will
be able to work flexible hours. On-site participation will be required 2-3 days per month, and may
include some weekends or evenings.
This position will involve contact with influential individuals by email, telephone, and in person.
The Intern will receive training in project management & planning, marketing and public relations
strategy, and business relationship-building.
Responsibilities
1. Design & conduct online surveys of ASCEND stakeholders to identify opportunities to
expand our event offerings; provide periodic reporting and analysis to the leadership
team.
2. Develop event concepts and agendas; communicate with partner organizations, guest
speakers, and venues to confirm event arrangements.
3. Coordinate responsibilities of the ASCEND leadership team, volunteers, and partners to
ensure that necessary materials and support staff are available, and that the event
begins and ends on schedule.
4. Conduct post-event followup with guests and partners.
5. Obtain photos, video, and other media content from events to promote the ASCEND
organization and its mission.
Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Hospitality, or related field;
or active full-time or part-time student in an accredited college or university pursuing a
related degree; or one year of experience in event management.
2. Strong spoken & written communication skills; experience with business correspondence
preferred. Applicants will need to provide writing sample.
3. Professional appearance & demeanor; strong organizational skills & attention to detail;
ability to work independently and take initiative.
4. Familiarity with Microsoft Project is a plus, but not required.
Compensation
This role is a part-time, volunteer position; community service and/or course credit may be
awarded with the approval of the intern’s educational institution.
An outline of the internship curriculum, key performance indicators, and proposed projects will be
provided upon request.
