Six Marketing and Public Relations Internships
Offered Summer 2010 at Nationwide Children’s Hospital
POSITION 1: Media Relations Intern FULL-TIME PAID
This position would assist the media relations team in reactive and proactive news media for Nationwide Children’s Hospital and all its entities.
Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Write news releases and media advisories
- Pitch stories to news media
- Coordinate media interviews and photo shoots
- Escort news media on hospital campus
- Feed media relations 'funnel' with story ideas/topics
- Track and report weekly media activity for CEO
- Manage and update media relations log
- Participate in media relations strategy planning/efforts
POSITION 2: Corporate Communication Intern FULL-TIME PAID
This position would work with the corporate communication team to develop effective communication strategies for Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s 7,000-plus employees and external stakeholders.
Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Plan events
- Develop story ideas, write articles and copyedit for publications
- Support the development, planning and implementation of hospital-wide communication campaigns including producing marketing collateral and Web content
- Work with the graphic design and photography teams to create print materials and coordinate photo shoots
POSITION 3: Visibility Initiatives Intern FULL-TIME PAID
This position would assist the visibility initiatives team with Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s external branding campaign, national broadcast media strategy and video production program.
Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with creative and production aspects of hospital’s external branding campaign
- Participate in media relations efforts
- Research and write columns for local publications
- Coordinate video shoots and/or media interviews
- Escort video production crews and/or news media on hospital campus
- Assist with production of internal videos, podcasts and Web videos
- Repurpose editorial content and video projects for Web application
POSITION 4: Interactive Marketing Intern FULL-TIME PAID
The interactive marketing team is responsible for helping to maintain the external Nationwide Children’s Hospital Web site. This internship position would support the interactive marketing team’s initiatives and would provide hands-on training and real-world Web marketing and social media experience.
Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Write Web copy for a variety of audiences
- Work with graphics
- Assist with Search Engine and Web advertising placements
- Coordinate data for reporting needs
- Learn Web management tools and update Web site
- Research social media opportunities
POSITION 5: Community Events Intern FULL-TIME PAID
This position would work with the consumer team representing Nationwide Children’s Hospital at community events and health fairs.
Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate the planning and logistics for Nationwide Children’s signature community event “Teddy Bear Safari" (event date - August 14)
- Coordinate and staff the tabletop informational display at community events and health fairs
- Schedule appearances for SAFE-T-SAURUS (costumed safety ambassador) and supervise team members
- Fulfill requests for promotional giveaway items
- Maintain detailed record keeping on each project and document measurement outcomes
- Assist consumer team with various communications directed to the consumer audience
POSITION 6: Physician Marketing Intern FULL-TIME PAID
This position would work with the physician marketing team to develop and execute comprehensive marketing tactics targeted to local and regional physicians that may include Web, internal, public relations and consumer communication.
Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage regional direct mail program and electronic newsletter
- Develop marketing collateral (i.e. fact sheets, brochures) with project lead and creative services team
- Assist with planning physician recognition events
- Report competitive media information or news activity
- Assist with Web site initiatives and content updates
- Interact with all teams including Web, corporate communication, media relations, consumer and visibility initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS
Position 1 – Media Relations
Students working toward a degree in public relations, communication or journalism. Completion of basic journalism/writing courses and familiarity with Associated Press style required. Excellent writing and communication skills are musts. Previous media relations, public relations or communication internship experience preferred.
Position 2 – Corporate Communication
Students working toward a degree in marketing, communication, public relations, journalism or related communication field. Good writing and communication skills are a must along with the ability to think creatively and to effectively communicate to both internal and external audiences. Completion of journalism/writing courses and familiarity with Associated Press style are required. Event planning experience preferred.
Position 3 – Visibility Initiatives
Students working toward a degree in journalism, communication, broadcast/telecommunication or public relations. Good writing and communication skills are a must along with the ability to think creatively and effectively communicate to both internal and external audiences. Must be comfortable juggling multiple projects and working independently.
Position 4 – Interactive Marketing
Students working toward a degree in marketing, Web communications, public relations or related communication field. Documented completion of basic courses toward degree is required. Good writing and communication skills are required and students must be proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office. Also required are strong organizational/time management skills. Students interested in expanding their technical skills and knowledge of Web management tools are encouraged to apply.
Position 5 – Community Events
Students working toward a degree in marketing, public relations or related communication field. Good writing and communication skills are a must along with the ability to think creatively and effectively communicate with team members and community audiences. Previous supervisory experience is essential. This position will provide the opportunity to work directly with community organizations and volunteers. Because this position supports work associated with events, weekends and some evenings will be required. Must be comfortable juggling multiple projects along with strong organizational skills and detail in management. Must be proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office. This internship will conclude on August 27. Candidate must be available to work through the end of August.
Position 6 – Physician Marketing
Students working toward a degree in marketing or communication. Documented completion of basic courses toward degree is required. Must possess strong, concise writing abilities with solid verbal communication and organizational skills. Must be proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office, primarily Excel and Word. Web design or content development experience is a plus. This position would provide the opportunity to work directly with physicians and external audiences.
